Message from the Premier

On November 8, 2016, the appointment of the Premier’s Task Force on Improving Educational Outcomes was launched as one of more than 50 initiatives included in The Way Forward: A Vision for Sustainability and Growth in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The task force members are: Dr. David Philpott, Dr. Marian Fushell, Dr. Margaret Wakeham and Chairperson, Dr. Alice Collins. These four individuals have comprehensive experience and expertise in education and will assist government by providing recommendations to inform an emerging Education Plan.

The Premier’s Task Force on Improving Educational Outcomes is an initiative designed to advance learning opportunities for students in Newfoundland and Labrador. I have asked the task force to consider priority areas in educational outcomes, including: early learning; mathematics; reading/literacy; inclusive education; student mental health and wellness; multicultural education; cooperative education; indigenous education; and teacher education and professional development.

Through public consultation and engagement with parents, students, educators and other key stakeholders, the task force will examine the kindergarten to grade twelve education system. The task force will consider current student outcomes, academic research and best practices, and review curriculum initiatives, legislation and policy frameworks.

Our government is entrusted with overseeing the development of youth and as such we have a vested interest in improving educational outcomes. The task force’s focused efforts will be responsive to the needs of students and prepare them to be global citizens in a dynamic world.

Sincerely,

DWIGHT BALL
Premier
